Former Edinburgh factory to be demolished to make way for brand new homes

A former Edinburgh factory is set to be demolished to make way for an array of different homes and apartments.

A number of commercial units on Beaverhall Road in Leith will be torn down to make way for a number of affordable homes and other residential properties.

Next week a council committee is set to determine on what premise the project can go ahead and approve designs for the new residential area.

Proposals for the site have stated that the large building currently on the site incorporates former businesses such as a factory office building and personal training studio, will all be demolished to allow for the new development to be created.

Lying close to Broughton Road, it is hoped that the new homes will allow for good transport connections to the city centre, as well as easy access to the open green space of St. Mark's Park and the Water of Leith to the north.

Speaking in the review, the proposal said: “Although traditionally an industrial area, Beaverhall is an area of change, with an increasingly residential character. The north of the area is characterised by residential development, whilst the west, south and east of the surrounding area is a mix of residential, offices and light industrial uses.”

To improve the amenities in the area, plans will also include the provision of a new cultural and arts workspace, as well as an additional commercial space for let.

Next week, councillors are set to discuss how the project will satisfy housing quotas, the impact on surrounding businesses and the effect on the environment.

Another issue flagged with the council is the mural painted onto the side of the factory, which some have named as being of local interest.

A decision will be made on the Leith based project on Wednesday (September 22).
