Former East Lothian teacher who suffered severe head injury all set for 1000 mile cycle

A former East Lothian school teacher who suffered a life changing head injury two years ago is set to embark on a 1000 mile cycle.

Nathaniel Spring was diagnosed with concussion and later developed post-concussion syndrome after falling while he was on a school trip to Dirleton Castle in 2017.

As a result he has been unable to return to teaching, and experiences memory loss, sensitivity to light and noise and severe fatigue.

However he is now all set to embark on a 1000 mile cycle around Scotland in a bid to raise awareness of debilitating head injuries.

The 50-year-old, who is from North Berwick, has set himself a challenge of cycling for 40 consecutive days – starting in his home town before heading north to Ullapool, to the Western Isles and then home.

For the last 18 months he has been using his local gym at the Macdonald Marine Hotel and Spa after they granted unlimited access to gym facilities and the use of a personal trainer.

And he now feels ready for the challenge.

He said: "My recovery has been slow. It has taken me more than a year just to feel confident on a bike. I set myself this challenge as it gave me something to work towards.

"I’ll be travelling solo, exploring new places and clocking in around 20 miles each day. I’m feeling very motivated and hope that my tour inspires others to take on their own challenges. If I can do it, anyone can.”

Macdonald Hotels and Resorts will be supporting the journey by providing accommodation at sites along the route.

Darren Beeby, general manager at Macdonald Holyrood Hotel, added: "Nat will be cycling continuously for 40-days – a challenge that would be difficult for most.

“To overcome this injury and take on such a courageous task is truly inspirational, and one that will no doubt encourage others to step outside their comfort zone for a good cause. We wish him the best of luck on his journey.”

The challenge will begin on Thursday (25 April) and for more information click here .
