Former DUP mayor Thomas Hogg convicted of child sexual offence

A former DUP mayor has been convicted of a sexual offence involving a child.

Thomas Hogg, 32, was convicted of attempting to incite a boy aged between 13 and 16 years to engage in sexual activity.

The former Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council will be placed on the sexual offences register.

The offence happened on September 28 2019, and the case was heard at Belfast Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Hogg, of Brae Hill Park in Belfast, had denied the charge of inciting a child he should have reasonably known to be aged under 16 to engage in sexual activity.

Two other charges were withdrawn, according to court list details.

The defendant is due to be sentenced at Laganside Courthouse on March 12.

Hogg had been arrested after a dance music festival in the grounds of the V36 park, which is owned by the council.

He subsequently resigned from the council with immediate effect.

The DUP had suspended his membership pending the outcome of a court case but he later resigned from the party.

Hogg was first elected as a DUP councillor in 2011.

He received an MBE in the 2016 Queen's Birthday Honours List for services to local government.
