Former Dundalk defender Sonni Nattestad signed and released by Norwegian top-flight club within two hours

Former Dundalk defender Sonni Nattestad was signed and then released by Norwegian top-flight side FK Jerv within two hours on Sunday.

The Faroe Islands international was announced as a new signing for the newly-promoted Grimstad side as they looked to strengthen ahead of their first-ever Eliteserien season.

27-year-old Nattestad arrived at Oriel Park last season with some fanfare but a mixture of injuries and poor form restricted him to just 14 appearances.

The towering centre-half scored on his debut in the President’s Cup win over Shamrock Rovers but was shown a straight red card soon after for an over-zealous tackle.

It was no surprise the 39-times-capped centre-half was not retained by new boss Stephen O’Donnell and he returned to Norway, where he previously played under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Molde.

Nattestad, who has also been on the books with Danish nursery Midtjylland and Icelandic side FH, was announced as Jerv’s latest signing ahead of the new season.

Within two hours, however, the club posted a statement confirming the cancellation of the 6’6 defender’s contract due to an unspecified issue.

“FK Jerv and Sonni Nattestad have today decided to cancel the announced contract,” read a statement from the Norwegian club.

“The background is an issue the player has been involved in, and which we should have been aware of.

“FK Jerv would like to apologize to everyone involved that we did not do a good enough job prior to the signing.”
