Former Dumfries and County golfer Connor Syme takes second place in Cazoo Open

Connor Syme secured the biggest payday of his professional golf career with a second place finish at Celtic Manor.

The 27-year-old was eight under for the week and four shots behind winner Callum Shinkwin in the Cazoo Open which was supported by LAFC’s Gareth Bale.

That result earned the former Dumfries and County player 305 DP World Tour points and a cheque for €192,500. Syme is now 32nd in the DP World Tour Race to Dubai rankings.

Celtic Manor is a course which has served Syme well with a joint-third finish in the Cazoo Classic then tied for eighth in the ISPS Handa Wales Open. He said: “I’ve had some good results here in the past, a third and an eighth so I do seem to like this golf course and I think Callum has had some similarly good vibes around here as well.

“So I’m obviously pleased with solo second, I was aware that was going to be my best result - I’ve had a solo second before but for the points this is a slightly bigger tournament, I’m really pleased and it’s a great platform to build on.”

Syme, who now resides in Fife, held a share of the lead on Thursday after going -4 through 18. But he wobbled on his second round finishing two over before going -3 in round three and four to make a push for the lead.

He carded an eagle on 11 on his final round before birdies at 15, 16 and 17 and a bogey at the last.

That dropped shot made no difference to the final standings with Syme four shots back off the lead and three ahead of third.

It’s a short hop across the Irish Sea for Syme this week for the ISPS Handa World Invitational at Galgorm Castle and Massereene in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
