Former Dublin star Ger Brennan vacates Carlow role

Ger Brennan has stepped aside as coach to the Carlow senior footballers.

The former Dublin defender was brought on board by Niall Carew following the ex-Waterford and Sligo boss’s appointment in August 2020, with Turlough O’Brien having stepped down earlier that summer during the pandemic-enforced freeze on inter-county games.

The Carlow Nationalist reports that Carew has moved quickly by appointing fellow Kildare man Ronan Joyce as Brennan’s replacement. Joyce has achieved notable success with Naas CBS, guiding them to successive Leinster Colleges A titles in 2018 and ‘19.

He comes on board alongside Carew’s selectors Simon Rea and Victor Doyle.

The acquisition of Brennan, a two-time All-Ireland winner with Dublin, was seen as a significant coup for Carlow last year though, after finishing out their 2020 League campaign, they lost to Offaly in the Leinster Championship.

This year they were denied promotion after losing the Division Four semi-final to Mickey Harte’s Louth before Longford scored a six-point victory over them in the Championship which, like 2020, was played on a straight knockout basis with no safety net in the qualifiers.
