Former Drogheda United chairman Vincent Hoey dies aged 84

Former Drogheda United chairman Vincent Hoey has passed away aged 84.

The League of Ireland club said that without their ex-boss, who was in charge when United won the Premier Division title in 2007, the club would not exist today.

In a statement, they said: "Vincent served Drogheda United throughout his life and has always been the heart and soul of our club.

"Without Vincent's efforts, vision and commitment, there would be no Drogheda United today."

And their sister club, Trabzonspor in Turkey, said in a tweet: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of our sister club Drogheda United's President Vincent Hoey.

"We extend our sincere condolences to Hoey's family and the supporters of Drogheda United, RIP Vincent Hoey."

Vincent founded the law practice of B V Hoey in Drogheda, and was keenly involved in the Drogheda City Status Group.
