Former doorman assaulted his friend and drove him around Bolton inviting people to watch him 'teaching a lesson'

A former doorman attacked his friend after claiming he had stolen his car.

Matthew Brown, a former doorman, created a fake wanted poster for Craig Palin and offered cash for information on his whereabouts, Bolton Crown Court heard.

The 30-year-old finally discovered the other man at his brother's home in Red Lane, Bolton, on July 18 of this year and went into the house to find him.

Brown went up to his victim's bedroom and set about punching him repeatedly before Palin begged him to take the assault elsewhere.

The two then got into a Skoda that Brown had been driving and he took his victim on a 25-mile tour of Bolton, stopping in various places and inviting people he knew to watch as he again struck Palin. Some of these people also hit the victim, the court heard.

The assault finally ended when the defendant took Palin to his ex-girlfriend's address in Cawdor Court, Farnworth, and she managed to pull the injured man out of the vehicle.

Later medical examinations found that he had severe bruising and swelling around his face and eyes, as well as a fractured bone in his upper cheek.

Mark Friend, defending, said that Brown and Palin had been friends and that the defendant had felt 'betrayed' that the other man was driving his car without permission.

He said that Brown felt 'absolute and unequivocal' remorse for his actions and that he had not initially reported the loss of the car to police because the two men were close but had later called 999 and made a report.

Mr Friend also pointed out that the defendant has spent five-and-a-half months in prison awaiting his sentencing. He appeared in court via video link from HMP Doncaster.

Addressing Brown directly, Judge Graeme Smith said Palin was driven around and people were 'invited to watch him been taught a lesson'.

He added: "You did put a wanted poster on Facebook on July 8. There were a number of conversations with people following that and you made it quite clear that when you got hold of Mr Palin he would be sorry."

Brown admitted his guilt to one count of causing grievous bodily harm at an earlier hearing.

He was sentenced to 26 months in prison, with a reduction for time already served in custody, and was given a restraining order banning him from coming close to his victim for three years.
