Former Donald Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos to report to prison on Monday after judge rejects delay

A judge has ordered a former campaign adviser to Donald Trump who lied to federal agents about his interactions with Russia during the 2016 elections to report to prison on Monday.

The federal judge on Sunday rejected an effort by George Papadopoulos to delay his two-week prison term and said he must surrender on Monday as scheduled.

Mr Papadopoulos sought to delay until an appeals court rules in a separate case challenging the constitutionality of special counsel Robert Mueller’s appointment.

The former foreign policy adviser pleaded guilty last year to lying to federal agents about his interactions with Russian intermediaries during the 2016 presidential campaign.

He also forfeited most of his rights to contest his conviction.

In September last year, Mr Papadopoulos was sentenced to two weeks in prison, a year of supervised release, 200 hours of community service and a fine of $9,500.

In his appeal, Mr Papadopoulos’ lawyer argued that the appellate case could constitute new evidence that could allow him to mount a challenge.

However, District Judge Randolph Moss denied the motions to postpone the sentence, saying that the time for Mr Papadopoulos to file an appeal had already expired.

He also suggested that it was unlikely the case challenging Mr Mueller’s appointment could succeed.
