Former Dolphins quarterback shadowing scouts at the NFL Combine

The cameras caught a glimpse of some fresh and familiar faces in the crowd during yesterday’s airing of the 2019 NFL Combine. At one point throughout the broadcast, the camera cut to a small group of Miami Dolphins: Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino, new assistant head coach/quarterback coach Jim Caldwell and former Miami Dolphin quarterback Matt Moore.

The former two are hardly a surprise, given the group of quarterbacks participating in on-field work at the time. But Moore? We last saw him in 2017, fresh off the heels of helping Miami lock in their first playoff berth in 8 seasons as the Dolphins’ quarterback for the final three and a half games.

Moore is reportedly “spending time” with the Dolphins’ brass, but he doesn’t have any official title. This comes from the Sun Sentinel’s Omar Kelly.

The Dolphins should be applauded for providing an opportunity to a former player to transition to the next chapter of his career. This isn’t necessarily unprecedented, as teams have done something similar before. One prominent example? The Philadelphia Eagles and recent Hall of Fame inductee Brian Dawkins. Dawkins has since stepped away from his role with the team but spent several seasons learning the ropes.

Having played the sport doesn’t guarantee success in the evaluation side of things, but it can be a nice start. And with the Dolphins’ quarterback search underway in 2019, vetting as many experienced minds as possible can only be a good thing.
