On Tuesday night, The Many Lives of Nick Buoniconti will debut at 10 p.m. on HBO. The documentary will give viewers a look at life at the former Patriots and Dolphins Hall of Fame linebacker.
Not only did Buoniconti spend 14 seasons in the NFL, but he also worked for HBO as an analyst for Inside the NFL until 2001. He also was briefly an attorney as he represented athletes such as Bucky Dent, Andre Dawson and nearly 30 other players at the time.
Although Buoniconti’s health has deteriorated recently, he was healthy enough to give interviews throughout the HBO special. His failing health has been due to natural aging and because of the effects of his football career.
“I take probably 20 pills a day, and that’s not an exaggeration,” Buoniconti said in an advance screening of the documentary. “I have a caregiver 24 hours a day, and it is difficult when you have all of your freedoms stripped from you. Marc (his son) is amazing being able to put up being paralyzed so many years. We’re both in a way paralyzed. I’m paralyzed because I can’t do the basic things in life.”
