Former Dolphins executive Mike Tannenbaum cautions drafting receivers early

Now that former Dolphins Vice President of Football Operations Mike Tannenbaum is in the media, he’s taken back up tweeting from his personal Twitter account, @RealTannenbaum.

Yesterday, Tannenbaum put out a tweet to express the hazards in drafting wide receivers early in the NFL Draft.

Considering some of the volatility involved, Tannenbaum certainly has a point. But keep in mind it is too soon to write off several early selections from Tannenbaums’ defined window of first and second round pass catchers since 2016 — including Denver’s Courtland Sutton, Carolina’s D.J. Moore, Tennessee’s Corey Davis and others.

But Tannenbaum has had some first hand experience in how difficult targeting the receiver position can be. The team’s first round selection in Tannenbaum’s first season as the VP of Football Ops (2015) was WR DeVante Parker, who has yet to live up to lofty expectations.

A year later, Tannenbaum and the Dolphins traded up in the third round to draft Rutgers’ Leonte Carroo, who has 12 career receptions in three seasons.

So, take it from Tannenbaum’s firsthand experience. Drafting wide receivers early in the NFL Draft is a challenging proposition.
