Former Dolphins DL Akeem Spence signs in Jacksonville

Former Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Akeem Spence has found another pro opportunity, once again in the state of Florida. Spence, who expressed at the beginning of this season that he ‘feels bad‘ for players still on the Miami Dolphins roster, will be suiting up for the Jacksonville Jaguars, his third team this season.

The Dolphins cut Spence at the end of the preseason, a surprise decision based on the Dolphins’ lack of experience up front and Spence’s continued quality play from his spot along Miami’s interior defensive line. After being cut from Miami, Spence signed in Philadelphia and played the first six games of the season for the Eagles, who have also stumbled out the blocks. Philadelphia, a preseason Super Bowl contender, currently sits at 3-4 and cut Spence on October 21st.

Spence was initially signed to try to help fill the void left by injured defensive lineman Malik Jackson — now he’ll transition to Jacksonville and try to fill in for an injured Marcel Dareus. Spence told Jaguars media that he was caught off guard by his release this afternoon.

One of Miami’s more reliable defensive linemen in 2018, Spence is a good illustration of just how volatile life in the NFL can be for players, pinballing all over the country in an effort to find some stability — even when your play at each of your prior two stops suggests you’re an asset worth keeping around.
