“Keep grinding.”
This, the simple message of New York Giant Michael Thomas to all of the un-signed players. Thomas, who spent his first four seasons in Miami before signing with the Giants last spring, wasn’t a coveted free agent, but as he nears his one-year anniversary of signing in New York, he did reflect on what his experience was like. And where that path has led him.
Thomas made the Pro Bowl in 2018, enjoying numerous career highs (passes defensed and interceptions) while continuing to serve as a reliable and impactful special teams ace for the Giants, as he had done in Miami.
Thomas’ journey through the pros is pretty incredible. Remember: Thomas signed late in 2013 with the Dolphins and in his first game intercepted Tom Brady in the end zone to seal a Dolphins victory.
He hadn’t even practiced with the team yet.
Thomas’ message to un-signed free agents is a simple one, but he is an embodiment of how far that mentality can carry someone. With a little luck, who knows? Maybe a yet to be signed free agent could follow in his footsteps here in Miami and make the Pro Bowl next season, too!
