Former Dolphins LB Chris McCain notches win in MMA debut

Former Miami Dolphins defensive end Chris McCain bounced around professional football for four seasons, spending half of his NFL career in Miami before spending a season in New Orleans and another in Los Angeles with the Chargers. But this summer, McCain is debuting on a different athletic stage — as a mixed martial artist.

McCain, only 27 years old, has officially made the switch from football to MMA and made a successful debut in the octagon yesterday in California. McCain participated on a fight card set up by Shawn Merriman as part of Merriman’s “Lights Out Xtreme Fighting” event.

McCain made the switch after having a contract offer pulled by the Chargers and being cut from the Indianapolis Colts in the 2018 preseason. Offseason issues plagued McCain — he was accused of spitting on a woman and grabbing her by the neck in January of 2018, a few months before the Chargers pulled their “right of first refusal” tender. McCain has maintained his innocence against the charges against him — but ultimately served 7 days in jail for the incident.

Instead of looking to get back onto the gridiron, McCain opted to try his hand at the octagon. So far, so good. McCain fought last night and scored a 2nd-round TKO in his first fight.
