Former doctor caught stealing £150 worth of perfume from John Lewis

A former doctor whose life spiralled out of control was caught stealing £150 worth of perfume from John Lewis.

Angharad Roberts had worked in a hospital after completing a medical degree but became addicted to drink and drugs after a relationship broke down.

The 38-year-old started abusing alcohol and told a court that she stole perfume from the Cardiff department store to try and pay off a drugs debt.

Judge Neil Bidder QC, who previously spared her an immediate prison sentence, told her: "Your time has, I am afraid, run out."

Cardiff Crown Court heard the theft happened at 4.40pm on December 4 last year.

Emma Harris, prosecuting, said the CCTV operator noticed the defendant "acting suspiciously".

Roberts was seen to pick up fragrance gift sets and try to remove the security tags, before making her way towards the exit without paying.

The court heard she was caught with items worth £153 and the police were called.

She was interviewed at the store and made full admissions, stating she was planning to sell the items to buy food, Christmas presents and pay off a drugs debt.

Prosecutors said she had been before the courts for 34 previous offences and was in breach of two suspended sentences.

She was previously given a six-month jail term, suspended for two years, for supplying heroin.

The defendant breached that sentence by stealing cider from a bar and items from a hotel room in Cardiff in August last year.

Roberts, from West Lee in Riverside, Cardiff, admitted theft in breach of two suspended sentences.

The court previously heard she had an impressive academic record and qualified as a nurse before completing a medical degree and becoming a doctor.

David Pinnell, defending, apologised for her late arrival and said she wanted to collect her methadone script on the way to court.

He told the court she had reduced her drug use, adding: "The path to complete abstinence can be a very rocky path indeed."

Mr Pinnell suggested there was a "glimmer of hope" and asked for the existing order to continue.

Judge Neil Bidder QC said: "I told her very clearly on the last occasion that she must completely cooperate with the drug rehabilitation requirement."

He noted she is still using controlled drugs and "self-medicating" with cocaine.

Judge Bidder said the court must protect its own orders, otherwise they would be ignored and the deterrent effect would disappear.

He jailed Roberts for 52 weeks and said he hoped she would use her time in prison to come off drugs completely.
