Former Dockers player jailed over police chase

Fremantle Docker Shane Yarran has been in custody since the incident.

Former AFL player Shane Yarran has been sentenced to six months in prison over a police chase in May.

The 28-year-old ex-Fremantle Docker pleaded guilty to charges including reckless driving to escape pursuit and driving without a valid licence.

Police alleged he reached speeds of up to 125 kilometres per hour in a 60kph zone during the early-morning pursuit through Gosnells.

He then abandoned the car and fled on foot before a police dog found him hiding in bushes nearby.

Yarran has been in custody since the incident.

Today, he appeared in the Perth Magistrates Court and was sentenced to a mandatory term of six months in prison for the reckless driving to escape pursuit charge, however that sentence was backdated to include the three months he had already served behind bars.

Magistrate Steven Heath took into account written character references from Yarran's partner and from Subiaco Football Club senior coach Jarrad Schofield.

Magistrate Heath said he was disappointed Yarran had turned to illicit substances but was pleased there were networks in place to ensure he did not relapse, including residential rehabilitation offered by the AFL Past Players Association.

"Your situation is all the more disappointing given your story was such a successful one," Magistrate Heath said.

"It is rewarding for you that you still have the support of your family and your partner.

"I encourage you to show that this is just a relapse, not a permanent slump."

Yarran also received a series of fines relating to the car chase and other separate incidents and had his licence disqualified for two years.
