Former Derby County defender angers Leeds United supporters with major Kalvin Phillips verdict

Ashley Cole is England's most-capped full-back of all-time, having racked up 107 appearances for the Three Lions.

The former Arsenal, Chelsea and Derby County man represented England at five major tournaments, between 2002 and 2014 - including three World Cups and two European Championships.

Following his retirement from international football, Cole went on to appear for AS Roma and LA Galaxy before finishing his playing career under Frank Lampard at Derby County.

With Cole's vast experience, one would think he had come across a player of Kalvin Phillips' ilk before, and at the very least would have a grasp of footballing statistics.

As seen through a series of exchanges with Leeds United supporters on Twitter, it appears that is not the case.

Much like Jamie O'Hara last week, Cole called into question Kalvin Phillips' influence and inclusion in this England squad.

When presented with an example of Phillips playing in an England teammate in the right-hand channel versus San Marino, Cole dubbed it a bad pass.

Then, when shown statistics which clearly highlighted Phillips' top-level distribution, Cole doubled down on his Phillips assessment, discarding the statistical evidence.

Note, in the Leeds United fan's reply outlining Phillips' statistical prominence; of all the players with a high proportion of successful long balls in the Premier League this season, Phillips' unsuccessful long passes ranked among the lowest.

This shows that while other players may be prolific long-range distributors, they also misplace plenty - unlike Phillips.

This oversight on Cole's part struck the wrong chord with Leeds supporters.

Fortunately, it is Cole's Euro 2004 colleague Gareth Southgate picking the England team on Sunday afternoon, as the Three Lions take on Croatia in their opening Group D game.

Phillips has featured in four of England's last five matches, and with Jordan Henderson's fitness issues, Southgate may elect to start the Leeds man versus the Croatians in lieu of the Liverpool captain.

England kick-off their Euro 2020 Group Stage campaign at 2pm on Sunday 13th June at Wembley Stadium.
