Former Cy Young Winner Apologizes for Suggesting Husky Pitcher Should Mix in a Salad

The White Sox haven’t won a game in a week and a half after suffering their ninth consecutive loss on Friday night and falling to 7-19 on the season.

Starting pitcher Lance Lynn, who was expected to anchor Chicago’s rotation, has been particularly awful, as he’s posted a 7.53 ERA through the first month of the 2023 MLB season.

White Sox color analyst Steve Stone recently joined Parkins and Spiegel on 670 The Score in Chicago to discuss Lynn’s less-than-stellar performance thus far this season, and in the process, he made a couple of comments about the pitcher that he’d like to have back.

“[Lynn]’s had a lot of leg issues and other things,” Stone said of Lynn, who’s listed at 6’ 5” and 270 pounds. “If cardiovascularly it’s bothering him with the pitch clock, maybe a couple salads would help … and I don’t know if he’s having problems with that. But if that is a problem, then maybe if you improve your cardiovascular by losing a couple pounds or doing whatever he’s gonna do to work out.”

After receiving backlash, Stone, the 1980 AL Cy Young winner, took to Twitter to apologize for his comments.

“A few days ago, I made a comment on radio about Lance Lynn and his weight as it pertained to endurance,” Stone said. “I made a mistake and take responsibility. No excuses and no rationalizations. I was wrong. Lance and I spoke yesterday, and I apologized. He accepted and we shook hands.”

The 35-year-old Lynn will look to turn things around heading into the month of May as the White Sox try to dig themselves out of a significant early hole in the AL Central standings.
