Former Cubs reliever Jesse Chavez signs deal with Rangers

The Cubs' efforts to re-sign valuable reliever Jesse Chavez fell short.

Chavez, who posted a 1.15 ERA in 32 appearances after a midseason trade to the Cubs, is rejoining the Rangers.

A source confirmed the agreement, which is a two-year contract in the $8 million range, according to a tweet by Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.

Chavez, 35, expressed his willingness to stay with the Cubs after the 2018 season, but a two-year deal from the Rangers gave him security for his wife and three children.

Chavez's versatility and effectiveness will be hard to replace, as the Cubs may need to pay more than originally projected for a reliever who can also handle the save duties when Brandon Morrow or Pedro Strop aren't available.

Chavez has pitched for nine teams over 11 seasons.
