Sept. 12--Retired Major League Baseball reliever Bob Howry, who played for the Cubs, White Sox and Giants, among others, has put his custom home in Peoria, Ariz., on the market for $2.85 million.
The desert contemporary, designed by architect Barry Goldstein and built for Howry in 2008, is distinguished by varying horizontal rooflines, walls of floor-to-ceiling glass and a textured colored stone exterior.
Designed for entertaining, the open-space floor plan centers on a formal living room with a wall fireplace that opens to a center-island kitchen and breakfast area.
Other areas within the 8,771 square feet of space include a formal dining room, an office, a gym, five bedrooms and six bathrooms. The master suite, done in polished black stone, has a fireplace and a large soaking tub.
Downstairs, a lounge decorated with souvenirs from Howry's playing career comes complete with a game/media room and wet bar. A home theater with tiered seating has a snack bar.
Outdoors, the one-acre grounds have a resort-like vibe with a step-up spa, multiple fireplaces and a negative-edge swimming pool with a beach entry. Expansive lawns, formal desert landscaping and a putting green complete the setting.
Howry, 42, appeared in 769 games, all in relief, across 13 Major League seasons. He retired in 2011 with a 45-52 record and a career 3.84 earned run average.
He and his wife, Dena, bought the property in 2005 for $330,000, public records show.
Tina Waggoner of West USA Realty is the listing agent.
