Former Crystal Palace striker James Daly departs Bristol Rovers for League Two club

Bristol Rovers have confirmed the departure of striker James Daly to League Two rivals Stevenage.

The 21-year-old had one year remaining on his deal at the Mem, but his playing chances were likely to be limited next season as Joey Barton reshapes his squad.

The Crystal Palace academy graduate has moved to the Lamex Stadium on a free transfer, and is set to line up against the Gas in the fourth tier next season.

Daly moved to Rovers in January 2020 and impressed fans with his work ethic and moments of clinical finishing, but injuries meant he struggled for momentum in the blue and white quarters.

The forward registered four goals and four assists in 35 appearances for the Gas.

His departure leaves Brandon Hanlan and Jonah Ayunga as the only strikers with an EFL start in Barton's squad, and – after handing a new contract to development squad striker Ollie Hulbert – the manager is understood to be in the market for at least two forwards in the summer transfer window to prepare for a promotion challenge.

Daly's first goal for the Gas came at Lincoln City in October, scoring a superb header in a comeback win at Sincil Bank.

Predatory finishes against Burton Albion, Hull City and Darlington followed, before injuries forced him out of contention.

Barton admired Daly's work ethic and attitude in training at The Quarters, but with Rovers scoring just 40 goals in 46 league games last term an overhaul of their striking options was inevitable and Daly was allowed to pursue opportunities elsewhere.
