Former Coventry star reveals big plans if the club are made homeless

Ex-Coventry star David Busst has revealed the club have identified a “great” site for a new stadium if they are forced out of the Ricoh Arena.

The Sky Blues' owners Sisu remain locked in a bitter dispute with Premiership rugby union club Wasps, the Ricoh's owners.

Their lease expires this summer and the League One club have potentially just two home games left at the Ricoh.

Landlords Wasps have said they will not enter negotiations about extending their stay while Sisu are suing them.

An EGM is scheduled for April 25 to decide whether to expel Coventry from the Football League if they cannot secure an acceptable ground for next season.

The EFL board is due to be updated on Thursday about City's plans including alternatives to ground-share at local Non-League clubs such as Rugby Town.

But Sisu want to solve the issue long-term by building a new ground on a council-owned site of a former school, called Woodlands Academy.

Busst,51, who works for registered charity 'Sky Blues in the Community', knows the premises well and says it could solve the headache.

He told Mirror Football: “We are praying Coventry can have a home within Coventry where they should be.

“They have asked for a piece of land and have identified one on the Woodlands site.“We used to do stuff at the school, holiday camps, and it would be a great site.

“A bit of infrastructure would have to be changed because of access and stuff like that but if that is where we need to be and have two stadiums in the city then so be it.

“It is a huge site.“It is the size of a normal secondary school with pitches all the way around it.“It is huge, you could have everything there.

“There would be able to get a working stadium on there.”Coventry, who played the 2013-14 season at Northampton Town, have been told by the EFL they must play home games within six miles of the city centre if they are kicked out of the Ricoh.

Sisu claim Coventry council undervalued the venue by £27million when it was sold to rugby club Wasps in 2014 and are proceeding with legal action.

Busst added: “A potential new ground is still going to be three-four years away.

“Whatever happens people will adapt and people who support Coventry City will deal with whatever comes because that is the spirit of the Coventry people.

“But there is a stadium in Coventry which was built for the football club and I would like to think at something at the 11 hour will happen.

"Tireless community worker Busst was speaking to promote the Nick Mowl Cup on May 6 which aims to raise funds to set up and run a national suicide prevention text scheme.

He made 50 appearances for Coventry in the Premier League before being forced to retire from a horrific leg break at Manchester United in 1996.
