Former Coventry City goalkeeper training with Notts County

Former Coventry City goalkeeper Liam O’Brien is currently training with Notts County in order to help him find a new club.

O’Brien joined the club on trial in the summer but Notts ended up moving for Sam Slocombe who has since become first-choice ahead of Ross Fitzsimons.

But Neal Ardley is eager to help 27-year-old O’Brien who has training with the squad with the former England youth international available on a free transfer.

Slocombe this week revealed how out of contract goalkeepers are finding it harder to find new clubs having claimed many lower league sides are opting for under-23 players from the Premier League and Championship.

Notts manager Ardley says it highlights just how difficult the transfer market is with supply far outweighing demand.

“We’ve got Liam O’Brien training with us and he is an outstanding goalkeeper,” he said.

“He needs to find a club still. He has a family to feed and it’s a tough market out there.

“We want to keep him fit and sharp. When he came here, we really, really liked him.

“When Sam Slocombe became available, we really him as well.

“We opted for Sam, but Liam has been training with us and can’t seem to find a club.

“But from what I’ve seen he’s a lot better than most goalkeepers I’ve seen playing regularly.”

O'Brien was released by Coventry at the end of last season having made 19 appearances for the club following his arrival from Portsmouth two years ago.

He counts Portsmouth, Brentford and Dagenham and Redbridge as his former clubs.

He also played for England under-19s.
