Former councillor's plans for almost 100 new homes in Shotts submitted to planning department

Plans for new homes and shops in an area of Shotts have been submitted to the council’s planning department.

A total of 97 houses and four shops have been submitted to North Lanarkshire Council in Torbothie.

The man behind the plans is former Fortissat councillor- turned-planner Tommy Cochrane.

He said: “We would like to see a general store because there aren’t a lot of shops there.

“If you are wanting a pint of milk or a loaf of bread it’s a 1½ mile round trip.

“There has been some interest in the stores which is pleasing because it’s all about getting investment into Shotts.”

In its planning statement TmC Planning state: “This application has taken the proposed development plan and used derelict land for much-needed housing in Shotts.

“The proposed development takes account of the remoteness of shops to the site, also current dwellings in the area. We have provided space for these in the plans for much-needed local retail.

“The development will be well-served by sustainable transport and will not put undue pressures on the educational facilities within the area.”

Since the application has been submitted to the council there have been several comments from nearby residents.

One local who objects to the plans said: “I’m objecting to this proposal on the grounds of public have not been able to fully engage in this consultation.

“Due to Covid, no public meeting has been possible.”

Another, who has remained neutral, stated: “There is a great deal of traffic using Torbothie Road at present, including large lorries coming to and from the Bells factory.

“Will Torbothie Road be upgraded or widened for a further 97 houses, bearing in mind there is still a development ongoing ?

“Will crossings be installed for the safety of the present residents, many of whom are elderly, and the children going to and from school?

“Will the schools, health centre and pharmacy have the capacity to cope with this?”
