Former cottage transformed into £1m house with views across Cardiff and secret gardens

For some people a lifelong love affair with a particular property can be traced back to fond childhood memories.

For a boy from Pentyrch climbing one of the hills above the pretty village north of Cardiff to play in the woods and fly a toy glider from the top of the elevated position it was a pretty white cottage nestled into the hillside.

This truly special house with layers of secret gardens stopped him in his tracks and stayed in his mind; for years.

It was his dream property that he never forgot but never thought the dream of owning it would come true.

Until the day when he discovered that the white house on the hill was on the market at a price he could afford.

At last, he had the chance to visit it and see if he would love it as much as an adult as he did as a child.

If the viewing went well, he might even end up buying it.

The garden and house perched above Pentyrch had him at hello, before the viewing had even properly started.

The owner, who wishes to remain anonymous says: "So, standing there in the garden when viewing the home for the first time, I was taken aback.

He says: "Emotionally, the house had already grabbed me; I didn't need to look inside.

"It hadn't been lived in for a year, but the work inside the house had been done, it was the outside where nature had thrived and got a little out of control, which is what I have focused on since living here."

For someone who sees a garden as of equal importance to the property, Warren House could instantly deliver and offer the potential new owner the chance to put his own mark on the surrounding landscape of this historic place.

He says: "I love wildlife and the outdoors, and the gardens here have to be seen to be believed.

"There is a woodland, two large lawns which I put in, ponds, beautiful acer trees. It is riddled with wildflowers, there is even what I call the orchard, with apples, pears and raspberries. It is a nature lover's paradise."

The very pretty garden has levels and layers that offer secret spaces waiting to surprise and delight you when you turn a corner or climb some steps.

But if a visitor can drag themselves away from the garden's nooks and crannies, woodland walks and open lawn areas, the house has layers of history to offer you too.

According to the estate agent selling the house, the property dates back to about 1846 and actually started life as a small cottage.

The original core of the cottage can still be admired in the main living room.

This space is one of the current owner's favourite places in the property mainly due to the original features the room can boast, such as the historic stone wall that still has pointing made from mud and horse hair.

The owner says: "There are the old stone steps from the original cottage too; they are not in use now but are still extremely beautiful, and next to the log burner is an original bread oven."

Over the years since its birth as a stone cottage, the house has been extended both sideways and upwards during the 1970s and the 1980s.

It's obvious from the design of the new upper stories that the driving force behind the extra accommodation was to maximum access to the incredible panoramic views across Cardiff to England in the distance.

This culminates in a 'top of the tree' bedroom at the pinnacle of the property that is reminiscent of a bird's nest amongst the treetops.

The picture windows ensure the best views of the surrounding landscape, wildlife, expansive views and a vantage point for star-gazing.

It's another space that the current owner enjoys, he says: "I love spending time in this bedroom on the top floor, there are windows on all sides so you never miss a view and can see right over the Bristol Channel."

The ground floor of this three-storey, six bed property has the original heart of the historic home but can also offer a separate study in the old part of the property, ideal for home working, with charming exposed stone walls and ceiling beams.

The owner says: "I love sitting there and looking out through the sun lounge to the gardens beyond. I've put a bird feeder there and it attracts all kinds of wildlife, I often see woodpeckers."

There's also a utility room and a conservatory which means you can still immerse yourself in the garden even on a bad weather day.

The current owner loves to hang-out in the substantial kitchen diner and not just because it's a very sociable space but also because it is well designed to connect as much as possible to the pretty gardens beyond through multiple windows and doors.

The owner says: "The kitchen is a grand space; it's wonderful in the summer as you can open the doors and bring the outside in, as well as enjoy a morning coffee on the patio.

"There is a set of steps from the patio to the big pond, which has a waterfall. That's another magnificent place to sit in the evening and admire the wonders the gardens offer."

On the first floor there is a family bathroom and four bedrooms, two of which have an ensuite.

But maybe the stand out feature on this first floor level of this layered house is the spacious balcony that can be accessed through French doors from two of the bedrooms.

The balcony offers another seamless connection between the house and the beautiful outdoor surroundings to add to the list of special spots to relax and be mesmerised by the setting.

Time for Warren House to mesmerise the next owner (Olivia Louise Estate Agents / South Wales Property Photography)

Changing circumstances means it's time for the owner to move on and time for someone else to experience the wonders of Warren House.

The owner says: "It has been great, the sort of house where kids could bring friends over and yet you couldn't hear the chaos they were creating!

"It offers the best of both worlds privacy and a kind of remoteness some dream of, yet you are only a quarter of a mile away from the village."

Warren House is on the market for £1.15m with Olivia Louise Estate Agents, call 029 2057 5631 to find out more.
