Former Corrie favourite is unrecognisable in her musical role - and fans are loving her new look

Former Coronation Street star Shobna Gulati swapped the cobbles for the red carpet at The Lowry theatre in Salford for her role in the musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.

Shobna, who played the late Sunita Alahan in the soap, plays Ray in the feel-good show about 16-year-old Jamie New who lives on a council estate in Sheffield and feels like he doesn't fit in.

The actress, from Oldham, has wowed fans with a new look for the role.

Fellow former Corrie star Katie McGlynn who was in the audience at the press night on Saturday commented afterwards on her Instagram: "Aw Shobna! You were brilliant. Hilarious!!!! I had to double take! Amazing xxx"

Shobna shared a photo of her Ray makever on her social media.

"And just like that she’s back #ray @jamiemusical @the_lowry coeeeeee only me!" she wrote.

"Wow love it!" gasped one follower.

The UK tour opened at The Lowry, where it will run until Sunday September 12.

Also at the press night were Corrie's Lisa George who plays Beth Sutherland and Jazmine Franks who played Esther Bloom in the Channel Four soap Hollyoaks.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie has also been made into a new which stars Shobna alongside Sarah Lancashire, who played the iconic Rovers Return barmaid Raquel Wolstenhulme.

Kate Ford, who plays Corrie's Tracy Barlow, recently sparked nostalgia when she shared a selfie with Shobna.

Her character Sunita was mum to twins Asha and Aadi with corner shop owner Dev.

She met a tragic end in 2013 after she had an affair with twisted Rovers Return landlord Karl Munro.

She became trapped in a fire started by Karl at the Rovers Return and later died from a cardiac arrest in hospital after he removed her breathing tube.

After Sunita's death a grieving Dev, played by Jimmi Harkishin, struggled to raise the twins alone until kindly neighbour Mary Taylor stepped in to become their nanny.
