Former Coronation Street star flooded with support after revealing cancer battle

Former Corrie star Gray O'Brien has revealed that he's been battling tonsil cancer for the past three months.

Gray, who played Weatherfield villain Tony Gordon on Coronation Street , went to see a doctor with swollen glands and was diagnosed with stage four tonsil cancer.

The 51-year-old Scottish actor, who played baddie Tony in the soap from 2007 to 2010, has signalled the end of his treatment by ringing a bell in hospital.

Sharing a video of the moving moment, he posted on Twitter: "About 3 months ago a trip to the doctors with swollen glands led to stage four tonsil cancer.

"Today marks the end of my treatment and I couldn't be more thankful to everyone who has supported me along the way."

After receiving a flood of support on social media he responded along with another photo he took of himself on the first day of chemotherapy wearing a T-shirt reading 'Straight Outta Chemo.'

He said: "I have been totally humbled by the response from my tweet.

"Although this is the end of my treatment I still have a long way to go in my recovery.

"Best wishes to anyone who is just about to start this journey. This picture was taken on my first day. #CancerAwareness #tonsilcancer."

Gray's fearsome Corrie character hired a hitman to kill Liam Connor after discovering he was having an affair with his fiancée Carla Connor.

Tony was killed off in dramatic scenes in an explosion in the Underworld factory after holding Carla and Hayley Cropper hostage.

"Your elated face ringing that bell is everything!" one fan tweeted to Gray.

"Take care and take time!"

"Is there a happier sound? I don't think so," said another.
