Former Cobh Ramblers manager Liam McMahon passes away

Cobh Ramblers have sadly announced the passing of former manager Liam McMahon.

Mr McMahon spent over 20 years as manager of the club, guiding them to their most successful period in the early 1980s.

Cobh Ramblers made a heartfelt tribute to their club legend on Twitter - with many others who knew him also paying their respects, Cork Beo reports.

Ramblers said in a statement: "Cobh Ramblers FC are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former manager Liam McMahon.

"Liam was in many respects the father of the modern Ramblers and responsible for our most successful period of the 1980s, including the FAI Cup heroics of 1983 amongst many highlights.

"He spent over 20 years as manager in four spells at St Colman’s Park between 1967 and 2001. He truly was one of a kind and will be sorely missed.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam. RIP Liam. A Ramblers legend.

"We were lucky enough to welcome Liam back to St Colman’s Park twice this year. The Ramblers flag is currently at half-mast to mark his passing. Details of arrangements will be publicised as we get them."

One of Liam's former players, Will Burton, said: "R.i.p. Liam, gave me my debut v Kilkenny city when I was 15, you never forget those who show great faith in you, even if you don’t understand it at the time. Wonderful man, will be sadly missed."
