Former coach house which has been derelict since 2012 is transformed into new hotel and restaurant

Tredegar's Morgan Street has been given a boost with a significant local building re-opening to the public after laying derelict for seven years.

The Tredegar Arms is now a newly-refurbished hotel and restaurant after receiving extensive work with a grant from the National Lottery and Townscape Heritage Initiative.

It is set to offer an exciting new lease of life to one of Blaenau Gwent's finest heritage assets, as Tredegar continues its efforts of regeneration near the town centre.

The building, previously used as a coach house, forms a key part of a historic landscape of buildings that were constructed out of the town’s growth from the iron industry in the 1800s.

While it had been left derelict since 2012, with fire damage to the upper levels leaving it in a state of disrepair, members of the council and other partners felt the building was worth saving.

Renovation work began in 2017 to restore the building with traditional materials, including a new slate roof and lime rendering and timber sash windows, allowing the exterior to appear as it was originally designed.

The historical valleys building now offers a restaurant and bar facilities, as well as a hotel with 10 bedrooms, for people looking to visit the town or stop in for a few drinks.

There is also stunning new interior complete with an extension, that includes a function room with disability access. It means the building can now be used as high quality venue, and could seriously contribute to the economic well being of the area.

Blaenau Gwent Councillor, Dai Davies, says it's a big boost for the community as it preserves the heritage of one of it's oldest buildings.

He said: “I am delighted that one of our historic buildings in the borough has now been reopened following extensive refurbishment works, and can now offer facilities for the community and those visiting from outside the area to enjoy.

"The building was part of a funding scheme that received a grant offer through the Tredegar Townscape Heritage Initiative, made possible thanks to the National Lottery.

“Not only has the grant helped to preserve our unique heritage, but it is a significant investment that will contribute to the economic vitality in the area. I wish The Tredegar Arms success.”
