Former CIA Director tends to “believe Iran more” over Trump

Former CIA Director John Brennan, who has been vocal against Donald Trump, stated his distrust for the president in an interview with MS Now. Brennan brought up Trump’s consistent denial of facts.

“I am confused how the president of the United States can credibly stand up there, under the wing of Air Force One, and claim that conversations have been had that apparently haven’t been had,” Symone Sanders of MS Now said. She is reluctant to trust Iran’s claim that there are no ceasefire talks in place. However, Sanders also could not readily trust Trump’s statement either.

“Well, I tend to believe Iran more than I do Donald Trump because he could not acknowledge the truth even when it is slapped in the face repeatedly,” Brennan boldly replied. As the former CIA director, it’s a shocking statement. He was also notably distrustful of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps during his time in government.

“And it’s clear that, you know, he’s flailing right now. He’s trying to figure out how he’s going to get out of his debacle he’s created. And so, he’s going to make these claims about negotiations that the Iranians are now sending signals that they really want to make a deal and indicate that it’s going to make a deal on our terms,” Brennan added. Nevertheless, the former director doesn’t believe that a deal is in the works at the moment.

Brennan says it’s also possible that the Trump administration is speaking to other intermediaries. “We know that the Turks and the Egyptians are trying to find some way to mediate this problem. So, there could be distant members of parliament that are there, speaking individually. But I don’t think anyone’s speaking authoritatively right now on behalf of the Iranian government,” Brennan concluded.

Nobody can be trusted

It would be easier to believe Trump if he gave out the names of the people he’s currently in talks with. Arguably, Trump would be more credible if he wasn’t always antagonizing the press whenever reality doesn’t bend to his will—but that’s besides the point.

On the other hand, Iranian officials denied negotiating with the Trump administration. Needless to say, the only thing certain is that the war is far from over. Both sides have threatened escalation, and what lies beyond the five-day ceasefire is uncertain. Moreover, Iran is still controlling the Strait of Hormuz and making non-hostile ships pay a toll for safe passage.

Republicans are now going after John Brennan

Brennan is a known critic of Trump and has served under former President Barack Obama. The Intelligence Committee voted to probe Brennan over a statement he made in 2023 regarding the Russian interference in the 2016 US elections.

Notably, Trump has a sore spot when Russian interference in 2016 is mentioned, often calling it the “Russia hoax.” The president has been vindictive against those who investigated his campaign’s connections to Russian officials. Therefore, this isn’t an unexpected development, especially since Trump has frequently targeted Brennan.

Brennan has a reason to severely distrust the president, as he’s often the recipient of Trump’s trollish remarks. Now, it appears that Trump’s Justice Department is locking in on Brennan for fulfilling his duty. But putting Trump’s vengeful personality aside, it’s generally difficult to trust a president who claims victory over a war and then asks $200 billion to supplement it.
