Former Chris Moyles Show producer Aled Haydn Jones announced as new head of BBC Radio 1

Aled Haydn Jones has been appointed as the new head of BBC Radio 1 - and dedicated listeners are reminiscing about his early days on the Chris Moyles Show.

Jones, 43, joined Radio 1 in 1998 as a broadcast assistant on the Roadshow, the channel’s annual summer music event.

He then presented a daily review of Big Brother on Moyles’ show in 2001 and became a permanent member of the host’s team the following year.

He eventually became head producer on the Chris Moyles Show, where he remained until 2012.

Jones also oversaw the launch of Greg James’ breakfast show on the channel and also presented Radio 1’s The Surgery, a weekly advice programme aimed at young people.

“I’m so proud to be taking the helm of the best youth music station anywhere in the world,” he said in a statement.

“Radio 1 is all about the best new music, the most amazing DJs, and entertaining our young audience, and we have dedicated teams working hard to deliver exactly that.

“We know Radio 1 will never stand still, and we’re going to listen to our audience and give them what they want, how they want it.”

In a tweet, he added that he felt “honoured to be given the opportunity to run such an amazing station.”

Twitter users who remembered Jones from his early days as part of Moyles’ team - when he was often the butt of some of the presenter’s jokes - praised his rise to the top job.

Some joked that the news had left them feeling old as they remembered his days as a rookie producer.

Moyles also shared a tribute to his friend and former colleague, writing on Twitter: “Very proud of my friend @ahj.

“He knows radio from every angle, from presenting to producing and dealing with grumpy morning radio DJs.

“To anyone who wants to work in radio, this is the result of hard work, focus, talent and determination. Well done Aled.”
