Former children's nursery destroyed by fire as probe launched into cause

A former children's nursery has been destroyed by a major fire that broke out in the middle of the afternoon.

The blaze tore through the old Spateston Pre-5 Centre in Johnstone on Friday evening.

Firefighters were scrambled to the fire which broke out around 5.35pm and was spotted by locals.

Three appliances from Renfrewshire stations tackled the fire, at Walpole Place, in the town, with police bosses reporting that no one was injured.

None of the adjacent businesses has been damaged as a result of the fire, reports the Paisley Daily Express.

Fire service bosses are carrying out a routine investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire.

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: “We received a report of a fire at a premises on Walpole Place, Johnstone, around 5.35pm.

“There are no reports of any injuries.”

Members of Spateston Community Development Trust praised sharp-eyed residents for their speedy reporting of the fire, and thanked emergency services for their swift response.

A spokesperson said: “First of all a massive thanks to the vigilant members of the community who alerted the emergency services to the fire.

“Also to all the responders from the Scottish Fire Service and Police Scotland for securing the area, putting out the fire and keeping all around the site safe.

“This could have been much worse but thankfully it wasn’t, this time. The building was mid-demolition as it was in a poor state of repair.”

The trust asked families to remind children to stay away from the site until it has been cleared.
