Former Chiefs WR Dexter McCluster worked out in XFL showcase

Former Kansas City Chiefs WR Dexter McCluster has been out of the NFL since the 2017 season, but he’s not letting that stop his football dreams.

McCluster spent four years with the Chiefs after being drafted out of Ole Miss in 2010. Versatility was the name of his game, starting off his career in Kansas City as a RB and finishing as a slot receiver. He amassed 1,500 receiving yards and 662 rushing yards to go with six total touchdowns on offense with the Chiefs. He also was punt and kick returner with Kansas City, adding 4,208 all-purpose return yardage and three punt return touchdowns during his career.

Once the NFL was in the rear-view mirror, McCluster sought to play in other leagues. In 2018, he went to play in Canada for the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts. He was unable to carve out a starting role and was released from the team in early May of 2019. A few weeks later McCluster signed a contract with a National Arena League team, the Massachusetts Pirates.

Most recently, McCluster took part in the invite-only XFL showcase in New York. According to the XFL’s press release, these showcases serve as a way to, “evaluate players for the XFL’s inaugural season.”

Here is the list of the activities players go through at each showcase:

• Height, weight, and additional measurements for each player

• Light Combine-like athletic testing, including the 40-yard-dash and shuttle drills

• Individual positional workouts and 1-on-1 drills, led by XFL Coaching Staff

• Private, additional workouts with XFL Coaching Staff, as needed

• Provide player interviews and background information, as needed

So basically they are like a pro day workout or combine for players. The coaching staff and personnel people for each XFL team are working on evaluating promising unsigned players that could staples for their particular XFL franchise.

McCluster potentially has an opportunity to sign on with a team for the XFL’s inaugural season. He’ll be 30 years old at the start of the first XFL season, so he still has some good football years left in him.

The XFL’s inaugural season kicks off in February of 2020, with eight teams around the United States. Would seeing a former Chiefs player suit up in the XFL pique your interest for the league? Tell us how you feel about the XFL on Facebook and Twitter.
