Former Chiefs S Eric Berry set to visit Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys are the first team to bring in former Chiefs safety Eric Berry for a visit, as first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The Chiefs released Berry last week after nine seasons in Kansas City, and just two seasons after he agreed to a massive six-year contract extension. The extension was only met disappointment and frustration because Berry was unable to stay healthy. In the last two seasons he appeared in just four games (including this year’s playoffs), and circumstances left the Chiefs little choice but to release him.

Now Berry is a free agent for a first time in his career. Teams will proceed with caution as they look into the injury that kept him day-to-day for the entire 2018 season. Berry elected to not have offseason surgery after gathering a second opinion on his injury.

The Cowboys are doing their research on Berry after missing out on the Earl Thomas sweepstakes. They were optimistic they could lure Thomas in free agency because he’s from the state and played college football at the University of Texas. When Thomas ended up in Baltimore, it became clear to the Cowboys that they’d need to look at other safety options in free agency.

During his prime, Berry was regarded as one of the best safeties in the league. He’s a leader, a great tackler and a natural playmaker. If he can somehow regain his previous form, he’d make a fine addition for the Cowboys. At this point that seems like the outlook of an optimist.
