Former Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles is first drum leader of 2019 season

Former Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles got to do the honors of breaking in Arrowhead Stadium’s new drum deck today.

Ahead of the game, multiple reports confirmed that Charles would make a return to Arrowhead Stadium for the home opener to be the first drum leader of the 2019 season. During the offseason, the team made some changes to enhance their most famous pregame ritual, installing a drum deck in the upper level of Arrowhead Stadium. Typically the drum had been placed on the field level. Charles is the first person to get a chance to pound the drum and lead Chiefs Kingdom as they welcome the home team to the field.

Charles had a ceremonial retirement as a member of the Chiefs this offseason, along with several other former Chiefs players. I have a feeling that Charles won’t be the last former player to be the drum leader. Look for Derrick Johnson and Dwayne Bowe to join him later this season as well as Brian Waters, who is scheduled to go into the Chiefs’ Ring of Honor later this season.
