Former Chiefs QB Alex Smith to wear external fixator for another month

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden provided the latest update on the health of former Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith.

Smith suffered a gruesome leg injury during the 2018 season and he’s still in the midst of his recovery. Even though Smith was spotted playing catch at OTAs with his teammates in Washington, he’s not out of the woods just yet.

Smith has been wearing an external fixator on his broken leg since his injury. He hasn’t yet been able to shed the device which keeps the broken bones in place to promote healing. However, there is now a bit of a timeline as to when Smith may be able to get the device removed. Here is what Gruden had to say via NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo:

Another month in the external fixator doesn’t seem too bad in the grand scheme of things, but it’s pretty clear that Smith is a long ways off from any meaningful recovery. It’s still not clear if he’ll reach a point where we could see him consider a return to playing in the NFL.

In the meantime, Smith has taken to being around team facilities to help out rookie QB Dwayne Haskins, Case Keenum and everyone else in the Washington QB room.
