Former Chiefs QB Alex Smith spotted throwing passes at Redskins OTAs

Former Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith was spotted out at Day 3 of the Washington Redskins OTA practice.

Smith was traded to the Skins from the Chiefs following the 2017 NFL season. During the 2018 season, Smith suffered a broken leg in Week 11 against the Houston Texans. It was a gruesome injury that ended his season and has left a shadow of doubt over whether he’ll play again.

Smith is still wearing an external fixator on his leg many months following the occurrence of the injury. It doesn’t bode well for his chances of playing again, but he appears to be in good spirits and making the most of the situation.

Smith made an appearance during OTAs for the Skins and even tossed the football around a bit. It’s really encouraging to see that he’s allowed to put some weight on his leg, which is likely the first step in a lengthy recovery process. If Smith has the will to work his way back and play again, I’m certain that he’ll be able to accomplish that goal.

Meanwhile, having Smith in the building and acting as a mentor while rookie QB Dwayne Haskins works to become the starter for the Skins cannot be understated. Smith has been credited with a huge part of Patrick Mahomes’ success with the Chiefs. Smith had a season to lead by example and show Mahomes how to practice, study, and put in the work to be a successful NFL quarterback. Haskins won’t exactly get that luxury, but having Smith around and involved in any capacity can’t hurt with his development.
