Former Chiefs QB Alex Smith set to make first start since devastating leg injury

The Kansas City Chiefs might not be playing on Sunday, but there is a former member of the team who will suit up as a starter in remarkable fashion.

Former Chiefs QB Alex Smith is set to start for the Washington Football Team in their Week 10 game against the Detroit Lions. While Smith played in relief for injured QB Kyle Allen last week, he didn’t get the start for Washington. This game will mark Smith’s first game started since suffering a devastating leg injury back in 2018.

The 36-year-old suffered severe fractures to both his tibia and fibula back in 2018. The injuries left him battling to save both his leg and his life. The thought of returning to football at that time was bleak, but every step of the way, Smith has shown that you can do anything with hard work and determination. He worked his way back through months of painstaking recovery and rehab to get to this point.

Now, Smith will make his first start in over 700 days, and he’s got an army of supporters behind him. One of those supporters is his former pupil, Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes.

Last week, Smith was 24-of-32 for 325 yards, one passing touchdown and three interceptions. That was the first touchdown pass he’d thrown since his return from injury. This week he’ll look to keep the turnovers down after spending the entire week preparing as the starter for WFT.

Chiefs Kingdom can show their support by watching Smith and the Washington Football Team takes on the Detroit Lions at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan on Sunday, November 15 at 1:00 p.m. ET.
