The Washington Football Team has made a quarterback change ahead of their Week 5 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
Starting QB Dwayne Haskins has been benched in favor of Kyle Allen according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Allen, of course, played for Ron Rivera and the Carolina Panthers last year. The decision is a bit of a head-scratcher after an impressive performance by Haskins against the Baltimore Ravens. He threw for over 300 yards and no interceptions, but the team was unable to notch the win.
Haskins won’t serve as the backup quarterback in Week 5 either. Instead, it’ll be former Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith. He had previously been listed as the No. 3 QB on the depth chart in Washington, but now he inches one step closer to returning to the field after his gruesome leg injury. The 36-year-old Smith suffered a serious fracture to both his tibia and fibula in 2018. After a long journey back to football, with multiple surgeries and rehabilitation, he’s that much closer to his ultimate goal of playing again.
If Allen doesn’t play well or suffers an injury, Washington would turn to Smith for their QB duties in Week 5 against the Rams. It’d be his first in-game action since suffering his injury against the Houston Texans in 2018. He finished that season with 2,180 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. During the veteran QB’s final full season as a starter in Kansas City he 4,042 yards, 26 touchdowns and just five interceptions.
