Kansas City Chiefs fans are eagerly waiting for the franchise’s leading tackler to be inducted into their own Hall of Fame, but they’ll need to wait a few years, per team rules.
They will, however, get to see Derrick Johnson honored by his college in the next few weeks. Johnson is set to be inducted into the University of Texas Athletics Hall of Honor. It’s virtually the same thing as a Hall of Fame, but it goes by a different name.
Johnson will be part of the 63rd class to receive induction into the Hall of Honor. He appears pretty excited to be recognized for his college days. Back then he wore a neck roll and was was known as one of the most vicious and instinctive linebackers in college football.
“It was a privilege and an honor to be (a) Longhorn,” Johnson wrote. “Blessed to be in this special class.”
During his career at Texas, Johnson racked up about every possible accolade that a linebacker could. He had two consensus All-America selections and three consecutive first-team All-Pro’s. In 2004 he was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and took home both the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Dick Butkus Award.
Johnson joins another recently retired NFL star, former Redskins and Titans LB Brian Orakpo, in the 2019 class. You can find a full list of the rest of the former Texas players who will join them here.
