Former Chelsea striker recalls how Man Utd legend Nemanja Vidic ended his career

Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton has jokingly claimed that Manchester United great Nemanja Vidic ‘ended his career’.

Sutton is known for his controversial views but this was more of a light-hearted attempt at humour after the ex-forward threw Vidic’s hat into the ring during the BBC’s best foreign import debate.

Vidic starred for the United from 2006 until 2014 and won five Premier League titles with the club. He was also a major reason behind why United reclaimed the Champions League trophy at the end of the 2007/08 season.

Sutton recalls playing against Vidic during the latter part of his career with Aston Villa and lauded the former Serbia international’s ‘uncompromising’ approach to football.

“Vidic ended my career - I played my last ever game against him,” Sutton told the BBC.

“He was part of one of the greatest centre-back partnerships the Premier League has ever seen with Rio Ferdinand. Beauty was Rio and the beast was Vidic.

“An old school rough and ready defender, he was tough and uncompromising but he was more than that. A superb reader of the game and leader. When the going got tough he was the one you would want standing next to you in the heat of the battle.”
