Former Chelsea striker Fernando Torres drops surprise return hint

Former Chelsea forward Fernando Torres has dropped a big hint that he could be returning to football in the near future.

The Spanish international, who made 172 appearances for the Blues over five years, originally retired from football in August 2019.

He had just come off the back of a spell in Japan with Sagan Tosu having previously enjoyed a successful return with Atletico Madrid.

Now, having been out of the game for nearly two years, Torres hinted that he could once again be lacing his boots up.

In a post published on the striker’s official Instagram account, he shared an image of a shirt donning the number nine, a number that he wore at each of his professional clubs.

Alongside the post, the now 37-year-old wrote: "I only understand life in one way - playing. That's why I've decided to return.

"This Friday I will communicate where."

It remains to be seen where the former Spanish international will indeed be playing his football but Chelsea fans will certainly be keeping a keen eye out.

Torres, whilst not having hit the heights throughout his time at Stamford Bridge following a record move from Liverpool, still achieved cult hero status in West London.

He scored a memorable goal against Barcelona at the Camp Nou to carry the Blues through to the final of the 2012 UEFA Champions League.

In all, the World Cup winner made 172 appearances for Chelsea and netted 45 goals in all competitions.

Torres’ best season came in 2012-13 by netting 22 goals as the Blues lifted the UEFA Europa League against Benfica.

He eventually left on-loan for AC Milan, that spell only lasting half a season before he returned to Madrid.
