Former Chelsea goalkeeper may hand Mikel Arteta and Arsenal boost for Southampton clash

Former Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero is set to make his Southampton debut against Arsenal on Saturday.

The 40-year-old made 38 appearances for the Blues between 2017 and 2021, keeping 14 clean sheets, mainly as a rotation option in the cup competitions.

He won the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup in his time at Stamford Bridge, while he also won an EFL Cup in his time at Manchester City beforehand.

The Argentine is now set to face Arsenal on Saturday, signing as a free agent during the week due to injuries sustained to their two other goalkeepers Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster.

Saints manager Ralph Hassenhuttl revealed in his pre-match press conference that they used video clips to get the goalkeeper up to speed ahead of the trip to London.

He said: “Alex [McCarthy] is out for three to four weeks. Fraser [Forster] tried this week but it’s a little bit too early for him. That’s the reason we signed Willy [Caballero] and we’re happy to have him here.

“We’ve worked with him on some information, video clips, so he knows how he has to play with the ball and against the ball. It’s important for a goalkeeper.

“He’s a smart guy, he is fit and coming in with a willingness to help us and this is what we need now.”

Caballero spent his time after being released by the Blues training at AFC Wimbledon, keeping himself up to speed and fit enough if he should be called upon.

Saturday will be the fifth time the goalkeeper faces Arsenal, however he is without a win in the four matches he has faced the Gunners, drawing once and losing three times.

He has conceded nine times in those four appearances and is in search of his first clean sheet against them.
