Former charity shop in Bristol is being transformed into a micropub

With a staggering 23 breweries, it's no wonder Bristol's beer scene is regarded as the strongest in the UK outside London.

Some of the city's breweries are ranked among the very best in the country and we're lucky to have a vast number of brilliant pubs serving their finest products.

A growing trend of the burgeoning beer scene in recent years has been the emergence of micropubs which, as the name suggests, are small establishments that serve a range of top quality beers.

They often take things back to basics by discouraging the use of mobile phones and encouraging conversation, making them perfect for those who find themselves increasingly irritated by the presence of technology at the pub.

Bristol is currently home to four micropubs with The Draper's Arms, Chums, Snuffy Jack's and The Wooden Walls all proving popular - but that number is about to increase to five.

The Lyons Den is set to open on Regent Street, Kingswood in early May, headed up by beer-fanatic Sam Powell and Steve Parkin, who used to manage former Asian restaurant Sticks & Broth.

"The support from Bristol's beer scene in helping us get to where we are has been incredible," said Sam, aged 34.

"I couldn't believe the number of positive comments our planning application received, which really highlighted just how untied the scene is.

"We feel like this is something a bit different for Kingswood. It's an exciting time for the area with plans for the transformation and I wanted to be part of that action.

"We can't wait to open."

The Lyons Den, which was previously a charity shop, will offer up to 10 cask beers and five keg beers, showcasing beers from breweries a little further afield in the South West as well as Bristol's most renowned producers.

Sam said he wants to work closely with Bristol's four other micropubs but particularly the nearest two, Snuffy Jack's and The Wooden Walls, to create a 'Beermuda Triangle'.

This could see them throw beer festivals and other events in the future.
