Former Celtic transfer guru credited with Dembele and Van Dijk moves joins Polish champions

Former Celtic scout John Park has joined Polish giants Legia Warsaw to head up the Ekstraklasa outfit's international scouting department.

The former Hibernian youth coach arrived at Parkhead as part of the backroom set up in 2007 and spent nine years in the club's recruitment department - helping to attract the likes of Moussa Dembele and Virgil Van Dijk to the Glasgow's east end.

He departed in 2016 and later took on consultancy roles with Israeli side Maccabi Haifa and Vancouver Whitecaps in Canada.

He was credited with helping to nurture the Easter Road side's 'golden generation' of talent, including current Celtic captain Scott Brown.

Polish champions Legia have been regular competitors in the qualifying rounds for the Champions League and Europa League., but have not played in the group stages of the continents premier competition since 2016.

Park admitted he now faces the tough task of restoring the side to the tournament proper on a regular basis, but admitted he is looking forward to the challenge.

He told the club's website: “I’ve had many discussions with the president and the club’s coaching staff and, having spoken to them, it was an easy decision to join. I know that the club and all the people working there have high expectations and ambitions.

“The obvious goal beyond winning the national trophies is to qualify for the group stage of the European competitions and I hope that with my knowledge and previous experience in this field, I will be able to contribute to that.

“I have been looking for a suitable project for several months and I’d been doing various advisory roles in the meantime, until I decided it was the right time to work for one club.”
