Former Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard settles compensation case as air rifle victim paid up after Palace intervention

Former Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard has paid the victim of a historic shooting incident back in France after Crystal Palace ordered the frontman to square him up.

Edouard departed Parkhead and earned the Scottish Premiership side £18m in the process with a Deadline Day move to London, scoring twice on his debut against Tottenham.

But before he even arrived in the East End, the 22-year-old was convicted of violence with a weapon after firing an air rifle at a pedestrian.

It happened while on loan at Toulouse from Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 and Edouard was told to pay Francis Guiral, who was left deaf in one ear, £20,036 compensation by the French Chamber of Civil Interests having ducked the initial £5,110 compensation from when he was sentenced.

Lawyers' requests for the full amount went unanswered, prompting Mr Guiral to take his case to French media.

Now Palace have ensured he's been squared up by the France Under-21 cap after Toulouse president Damien Comolli put the victim in touch with Edouard's new club.

Guiral said: "Since we started this process, he's played dead. Odsonne did not come to court and he had never paid the sum he is owed me for my care.

"I can no longer hear anything from that ear and I have lost my balance.

"Damien Comolli contacted me and promised to help and offered me support. He wrote that he was sorry I was in this position and about the physical and psychological consequences that I have to endure.

"He gave me an email address belonging to a member of Crystal Palace.

"And now it's finally over."

Guiral had previously described the incident when he recalled: "On February 11, 2017, I was walking quietly in the Busca district in Toulouse, when a car stopped. The driver opened the window, I thought he wanted some information.

"I put my head to the window and there was a bang. I collapsed to the ground, my ear was bleeding. He looked at me without saying anything and then quietly moved away."
