Former Celtic striker Carlton Cole makes passionate anti-racism call as he urges 'deep cleanse' following Greg Clarke resignation

Former Celtic striker Carlton Cole has called for more education after Greg Clarke's racist comments that forced him to quit the FA.

Clarke had described black footballers as 'coloured' as he discussed racial abuse with a Government committee earlier this week.

He did apologise and said he was 'deeply saddened' by the news but it wasn't enough to save his job after a series of offensive comments.

As well as his racial language towards black players, Clarke also suggested South Asians want to work in IT and that referred to gay players as making a ‘life choice’.

He also said young players in the women’s game didn't like having a hard football hit at them.

And Cole admits he wasn’t surprised by the comments that were made by Clarke and insists the FA should have sacked him instead of letting him resign.

He then told talkSPORT: "I’m not coloured. I’m black. I don’t want to be put in a box.

"I don’t even like 'BAME'. I don’t want put in this group. I don’t understand why they’re always trying to group us up.

"We are what we are, we’re all human, we all do the same thing. We have different cultures and different mindsets but at the end of the day we’re all human.

"I don’t want to be put in a box to say ‘I’m coloured’ or ‘I’m BAME’. No. I’m not that.

"I just want to make everyone know education is needed and it’s needing a deep cleanse, and this is what we’re going to see now."

After resigning, Clarke said: "My unacceptable words in front of Parliament were a disservice to our game and to those who watch, play, referee and administer it. This has crystallised my resolve to move on.

"I am deeply saddened that I have offended those diverse communities in football that I and others worked so hard to include."

Cole spent a season at Celtic under Ronny Deila but was released by the club in 2016 after just four Premiership games and no goals.
