Former Celtic star reveals the Eddie Howe concern that lingers as he takes issue with 'baffling' statement

Former Celtic defender Mark Wilson admits he was "taken aback" by his former club's decision to ask for season ticket renewals without a new manager in place.

Eddie Howe is expected to be appointed as the club's next boss imminently but a section of the club's support voiced concerns over the statement.

The Green Brigade have urged their members to "hold off" renewing as they seek talks with other supporters' groups ahead of the new season.

And Wilson can see why the decision to ask fans to part with their cash without Howe in place caused such a fuss among a fanbase who watched their 10 In a Row dreams disappear while being unable to attend matches.

And the former Parkhead defender concedes he was among the club's followers who was forced into a double take on Wednesday.

Speaking on Superscoreboard, he said: "I mean I was taken aback when I saw the statement Celtic put out.

"A long time has passed since Neil Lennon left, the club have had a lot of time to work on things when the season was wrapped up and Rangers had won it.

"They had a few weeks to the Scottish Cup game (against Rangers ) where the focus turned to that and getting the best out of the squad.

"They went out and a lot of time has passed since that game to get things sorted.

"To put out that statement, a part of me feels for the marketing department who have to sell season tickets and put something out, we're at the end of May.

"You need to give people the right amount of time but even then they must have been wondering what reaction we'll get to this statement saying we would have hoped to have a manager by now.

"It's no surprise that, is it? Celtic fans have been saying that for months now and it's just remarkable that nothing is in place.

"Everybody is of the opinion that Eddie Howe is nailed on to get the job but I think people more experienced in football than me will tell you that nothing is certain until you see a manager standing with the scarf above his head and the contract signed.

"That's the thing that's concerning fans just now is, why isn't this done? If you're looking to sell season tickets surely you're big plug after this season is here's our new manager, Eddie Howe or not, here's his first press conference and is able to put his words across to make Celtic fans sit up and say that is impressive.

"Then the next day bang! Season ticket renewal time, here we go.

"To do it the way they have, it baffles me, it really does."
