Former Celtic star Patrick Roberts axed by Girona following miserable spell

Former Celtic hero Patrick Roberts has been axed by La Liga side Girona after a desperate season.

The Manchester City winger has spent this campaign on loan in Spain with the English Premier League side's partner club.

But Roberts has started just six league games and has failed to establish himself at Girona after not managing a full 90 minutes for the club.

And with the Catalan club battling against relegation, manager Eusebio Sacristan has made it clear he doesn't see the 22-year-old as a part of his plans for the remaining matches.

Sacristan said: "Patrick Roberts isn't in the squad. There are other players in the team I believe that are better and there's no point entering into further details."

Roberts spent two-and-a-half years at Celtic on loan and helped them win three titles during his time under Brendan Rodgers.

He netted 15 goals for the Hoops and made 36 league starts.

He still has a year of his contract left at City when he returns at the end of this season, but his hopes of making an impression in Spain appear to be over.
